The Overview Effect

Upon fulfilling his lifelong dream, hurtling through space on Apollo 14's 1971 mission to the Moon, former astronaut Edgar Mitchell found himself enraptured by a profound sense of universal interconnectedness. This experience, which he now calls 'Noetic,' catalyzed his mission to explore human consciousness and eventually found The Institute of Noetic Sciences. IONS is "...an emerging movement of globally conscious citizens dedicated to manifesting our highest capacities."

"I recognized that the Newtonian idea of separate, independent, discreet things in the universe wasn't a fully accurate description. What was needed was a new story of who we are and what we are capable of becoming,” says Mitchell, whose resulting epiphany completely shifted his view of human potential. Today IONS seeks not only to enhance quality of life on our planet but to unite objective with subjective methods of perceiving, to honor multiple ways of knowing, and to uphold the value of consciousness in a myriad sectors running the gamut from business to healthcare.

This cognitive shift and renewed perspective as a result of venturing into space defies labels or dissection but certainly demands our continuing inquiry.
